Goldsmiths was established in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1778 under the name Reid & Sons, and the original store is still trading. Goldsmiths is the largest retailer of Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Tag Heuer and Gucci in Britain. Goldsmiths was delisted from the London Stock Exchange in 1999. It was in a management take-over (along with the Baugur Group) in May 2004, for the value of ISK 14.4 billion. It is now a part of the jewellery group Aurum Holdings, which owns Goldsmiths, Watches of Switzerland and Mappin & Webb.[1]
Goldsmiths have received three Royal Warrants.[2] As of 2011, there are over 160 Goldsmiths jewellery stores in Britain, including 5 in Northern Ireland.[3]
Goldsmiths crafted the FA Cup and the Rugby League trophies.[2]
They currently sponsor the Leicester Tigers player of the month award.[4]
